Chiropractors focus on musculosketal and nervous-system disorders – like back and joint pain, or headaches – through skilled hands-on manipulation of the neck, spine and other regions. As with other medical professionals, chiropractors focus on prevention and recommend things like appropriate exercise and good workplace ergonomics to minimize joint pain and injury.
The specialty is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, noninvasive treatments for many of these complaints. According to the American Chiropractic Association, the treatment is covered by many health care plans including major medical plans, workers’ compensation, Medicare, some Medicaid plans, and Blue Cross Blue Shield plans for federal employees.
Chiropractic and medical doctors have comparable amounts of classroom education, but a significant difference lies in the more natural, holistic approach of chiropractors. In some cases, care is an alternative to mainstream drugs and therapy. In others, it may enhance and supplement the care of more traditional providers.
